Whistleblowing on Doping in Sports

Whistleblowing on Doping in Sports

The major doping scandals in recent years were primarily revealed by whistleblowers. However, little is known about the circumstances that encourage athletes and their support staff to report doping. Therefore, this research project aims to investigate the social conditions of whistleblowing on doping in sports and their implications for the fight against doping.

In addition to analyzing data on public whistleblowing cases, we plan to interview individuals who had reported doping and related misconduct. Thus, this project offers everyone an opportunity to share their personal experiences of the associated decision-making process. Participants in our study can contribute significantly to expanding the use of whistleblowing against doping and facilitating the reporting of doping misconduct.

This research is a collaborative project between the Technical University Darmstadt (Prof. Felix Kühnle, project leader), the Arctic University of Norway (Prof. Marcel Reinold, project partner), and the University of Education Schwäbisch Gmünd (Prof. Jochen Mayer, project partner). It is conducted in cooperation with the National Anti Doping Agency of Germany and funded by the German Federal Institute of Sport Science.
